Artist Whendy Merryman offers summer art camps, concentrating in clay, ceramics, and painting, for children ages 6 to 12. Her Lil’ Bit Art for ages 2 to 6 and classes for ages 6 to 12 are offered in the fall and spring at her residential studio. Classes explore all media and teach basic art principles.

Memphis College of Art’s Summer Art Camp offers four sessions of one-week classes in June and July for ages 5 to 16. Summer Art Camp Junior includes weeklong summer art sessions for ages 4 and 5. Sessions also offered at Germantown’s Municipal Park for ages 4 to 6. Saturday School provides programming for kids during the fall and spring semesters. For older teens, MCA holds a Pre-College Summer Art Academy, which gives students the opportunity to study art on the college level and earn college credit. For adults, summer sessions in beginning art and photography held in evenings and on Saturday.

Kids act and dance at Fun in Theatre Summer Camp for grades pre-K to 8. Students craft props, write skits, and learn about theatre. Find the spotlight at FIT camps July 11-15 and July 18-22. Saturday morning acting classes are offered fall and spring. James and the Giant Peach runs July 29-31, Aug. 5-7. An additional matinee performance at 2 p.m., Aug. 6 at Memphis Botanic Gardens. Camp Broadway, for theatre-loving kids ages 12 to 17, is taught by Broadway professionals. The camp runs July 25-29 and concludes with a performance. The Orpheum’s Summer Institute is a workshop for high school sophomores to seniors, as well as college freshmen. Experience the inner workings of the theatre. Summer Institute is offered each June. with classes taught by local artists and Orpheum staff.

The Community Music School offers music programs for every age and for all ability levels in piano, strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, and voice. Private music lessons, group classes (Suzuki and traditional), and ensembles. Suzuki programs start at age 3 and Kindermusik for tots ages 1 to 7. Summer camps include Memphis Music Camp, Memphis Suzuki Institute, Piano & Art Camp, and Kindermusik Adventures.

Ballet Memphis School offers dance for all ages. Classes begin in August and January. Children in the school can audition to perform in Ballet Memphis’ annual production of Nutcracker, and all students ages 3 to 18 receive two complimentary tickets to main stage performances.

Children’s Ballet Theatre
Directed by Mary VanDyke Roudnev, Children’s Ballet and Dance offers students ages 2 to adult a dance program to build poise, confidence, grace, concentration and posture. Ballet training is in the Russian tradition. Each class offers beginner to advanced sections with performance opportunities, including the Children’s Ballet Theater Nutcracker and recital. Classes include pre-ballet, ballet, pointe, jazz/tap, flamenco, lyrical, musical theater, vocal performance, theatre, adult ballet and classical conditioning. Also available is a Conditioning Class for children and adults with mild physical disability or injury.

Now in its 25th year, Dance Works emphasizes an international accredited classical ballet program as its foundation, which serves as a springboard for introducing other dance forms such as creative dance, modern, jazz, and hip-hop for children ages 4 and up. Pilates offered for ages 14 and older. The 24th Annual Chance to Dance, a four-week intensive summer program for children ages 7 and up, runs July 5-29.
