“What does being a Memphian mean?” Get ready to give your two cents for the upcoming exhibit at the Pink Palace Museum. This special exhibit titled “Making Memphis: 200 Years of Community” celebrates the Bicentennial of the City and is scheduled to open March 2019.
“We aim for the exhibit to be an accurate representation of Memphis by inviting public to contribute in several ways,” notes Nur Abdalla, coordinating curator at the Pink Palace Museum. The exhibit brings together stories of the past and present and their influence on the future to showcase the interconnected web of Memphis history.
In the upcoming months (May through October 2018), the museum will be collecting words, photos, and sound bites throughout the city to include in the exhibit. It is going to be a multimedia, multisensory experience for Memphians.
The interactive components of the exhibit include:
- “Word Cloud” – a three-dimensional art installation communicating the current thoughts and feelings about Memphis.
- “Faces of Memphis Mural” – visually portraying the diversified community.
- “Sound Bites-Voices of Memphis” – a collection of 30-second recordings answering questions related to the city.
“As far as the future segment is concerned, we are working with Memphis 3.0 to include some of the community mapping content and art generated as part of the development, planning, and growth of Memphis,” mentions Abdalla.
Throughout the summer, public are welcome to stop by the Community Engagement Tables at various venues including the Pink Palace Museum, festivals, libraries, community centers, and senior centers to share their memories of Memphis.
