MP recommends: I am Harriet Tubman by Brad Meltzer
Memphis Parent receives some of the best books for the staff to review and among them recently is a beautiful and inspiring book about Harriet Tubman. It is part of a series of books by Brad Meltzer called ‘Ordinary People Change the World’. It is well written yet simple and engaging for young readers. Meltzer goes into detail of Harriet’s (originally named Araminta) life sharing her challenges and bravery which led to her becoming the “Moses” of her people and later a passionate activist. Our family enjoyed reading it together and we enjoyed the illustrated timeline at the end to bring her story back together for us. Brad also gives additional resources for kids to continue learning. And did I mention inspiring? I was tearing up at the end with those ‘Yea! Harriet!’ tears. This is our history. – Ashley Haeger
