Metal Museum 374 Metal Museum Dr, Memphis, Tennessee 38106
Visitors of all ages curious about the art and craft of metal work can experience an afternoon of activities and interactive learning at the Metal Museum from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22.
Family Fun Day is a free event for the public during the 44th Annual Repair Days at the Museum. Visitors can take part in hands-on make-it stations and explore the Master Metalsmith exhibition on display in the galleries. The Sculpture Garden and gazebo areas provide idyllic shady spots for a picnic lunch with friends and family. Repair Days, which opens Thursday, Oct. 20, continues Saturday with a large iron pour, which visitors are encouraged to stay and watch as approximately 2,500 pounds of molten iron is cast. For the uninitiated, an iron pour is an exhilarating process in which iron is melted in a big furnace called a cupola and poured into molds to cool and harden, creating designs of different shapes and sizes. The iron pour is an opportunity for visitors of all ages to learn how items we are around every day are made, from car parts and tools to kitchenware and ornamental objects. The Metal Museum teaches through demonstrations and classes in the Metals Shop and inspires through the various exhibitions on display from around the world, making it an ideal place for learners of all ages.
