"We're incredibly excited for the Hello World program to come to Memphis thanks to this STEM action grant from Society for Science,” says Art Technically director, Lily K. Donaldson. “This program will give Memphis students an opportunity to explore journalism, STEM, STEAM, and the arts in a fun and welcoming environment."
Art Technically, a community-based STEM organization has been awarded a $4,000 STEM Action Grant by The Society for Science. Art Technically plans to use the $4,000 toward their Hello World student science journalism program. Memphis-area college students can apply to receive scholarships to work as science journalism mentors to middle and high school students. Two selected college-aged students will each receive $2,000 in scholarships for mentoring. The middle and high schoolers selected for the program will receive guidance and mentoring including student pitch sessions, guidance on how to write articles, and also how to submit articles for publishing. Students will also have the opportunity to publish their articles in Art Technically Blog, in addition to receiving editing support for their school papers.
Memphis college-aged students and 4th-12th graders with their parents/guardians can apply at arttechnically.org/memphis.
"Here at Art Technically, we believe that every child deserves a well-rounded education that includes both STEM, and the arts,” adds Donaldson. “Our Hello World students will engage with exciting STEM and arts topics and participate in student journalism, which often isn't available at Memphis-area schools."
Art Technically was founded to provide disadvantaged K-12 students across Tennessee and beyond with educational opportunities in STEM and the arts, the two most underserved subjects at Title 1 and rural schools. This past school year, Art Technically has brought STEM and the arts to more than 10,000 people through multiple programs including at the Museum of Science & History in Memphis for the annual Tennessee STEAM Festival.
The Society of Science is granting $176,000 in grants this year to 45 grassroots organizations through its STEM Action Grant program. They use a variety of outreach efforts to ensure that underserved and marginalized communities have opportunities in science and engineering.
