The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis will host their annual Youth of the Year Competition on Tuesday, February 5th. The competition will be held at The University Center Theater on the University of Memphis Campus, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Every year, The Boys & Girls Club recognizes exceptional club members by offering this award. Youth between the ages of 14 and 18 are eligible to compete in The Boys & Girls club of Greater Memphis’ Youth of the Year program representing the club they attend.
The competition, presented by Higher Visibility, will have six Club members competing for the 2020 title. Candidates must complete an application and write three essays that focus on their club experience, vision for America’s youth, and personal brand. The essays will be judged for content, clarity, and overall quality.
On the evening of February 5th, the judges will score each candidate on selected criteria and announce the Youth of the Year winner. The winner will receive a predetermined scholarship and represent the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Memphis at various events. He or she will also represent the Boys & Girls Club in Nashville in March at the Tennessee State Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year Competition.
The judging panel will included a select number of community members chosen by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis. The candidates will each provide a three minute speech based upon the content of their three application essays showcasing their public speaking abilities, stage presence, and poise. After the speech, they will conduct a 15-minute personal interview with questions from the judges.
Adam Heitzman, managing partner at Higher Visibility and one of the judges for the competition, shared, “Higher Visibility is thrilled to be able to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis and the Youth of the Year. It is a great honor for these young adults to be nominated, and it shows our city is going to be in great hands if these are our future leaders.”
