My Big Backyard is getting a new addition to Playhouse Lane: The Castle Redeux. Along with a castle, there will be a dragon, king and queen thrones, and crowns and costumes.
Bernard Meck and Tim Pace, both regional artists who helped with the design of existing playhouses, have returned for the building of Castle Redeux. The Medieval castle is entirely made from reclaimed material. The walls are from a broken sidewalk. The dragon is made from parts of propane tanks, rake tines, horseshoes, and hedge clippers. The thrones are crafted from pieces of old garden gates. Props such as the crowns and cups are made from pieces of fans, saws, chicken feeders, and more.
There are also interactive components such as a tic-tac-toe board, a catapult, a few costumes, and the sword in the stone. The Castle Redeux is a place for kids to use their imagination, where they can use the interactive components to explore their creativity. This 30x30 area is perfect for adventurous, fairy-tale seeking kids. The building of the new addition would not have been possible without a grant from The Children’s Foundation of Memphis. It will officially open April 22nd, just in time for Memphis Botanical Garden’s 10-year anniversary and Earth Day.
At Castle Redeux, watch your children explore their minds and creativity as they scavenge around the castle, throw on the clothes of royalty, and decide if the dragon is their fierce friend or a beast to slay.
