The Children’s Museum of Memphis is hosting a month-long celebration of Hispanic heritage through art, language, and literature — September 15 through October 13.
Children can participate in fun, hands-on activities rooted in Hispanic countries, including interactive storytelling, daily pop-up activities, and sensory play. The Museum will highlight a different country weekly to represent a handful of the many Hispanic nations, and will host special activities or performances and Hispanic food trucks on Sundays.
Some events will include:
- Interactive story times with the books The Woman Who Outshone The Sun, The Little Doctor, Waiting for the Biblioburro, Broken Butterfly Wings, and more.
- Pop-up activities like designing Quinceañera dolls and sashes, pinata breaking, highlighting Hispanic food (molcajetes, bowls used to grind spices, and pupusas, thick griddle cakes), piscuchas (an El Salvadoran kite), embroidered bags, leather work, petroglyphs using handmade playdough, bobbin lace contest, and Spanish language instruction.
- Learn about the talents of famous artists from each country with related art projects in the Arts and Innovations Lab.
- Explore music through traditional Hispanic instruments including maracas (percussion instrument), a marimba (a deep-toned xylophone), cumbia (Colombian dance), and güiros (percussion instrument).
