Michael Chen, a Collierville High School student, is one of the top 300 finalists chosen through a national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) competition for high school seniors.
Michael Chen’s project, “The Regulation of Low-Level Backing on Supercell Intensity and Tornadogenesis Identified by Non-Hydrostatic Numerical Weather Prediction Model Analysis via Novel Hodograph Designs,” was selected as one of the 300 finalists from 1,949 participants.
Regeneron and Society for Science picked 300 students who have been chosen as scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, a highly respected science and math competition for high school seniors. The 300 finalist were chosen to receive a $2,000 award. Additionally, their respective schools will also receive $2,000, bringing the total award money to $1.2 million from Regeneron.
Chen, along with the other scholars of the Regeneron Science Talent Search, were picked out of almost 2,000 applicants from 627 high schools in 48 states in the US, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, and four other countries. These scholars were chosen for their excellent research, leadership abilities, community involvement, dedication to academics, imaginative scientific questions, and potential as leaders in STEM fields. They were chosen based on the original research projects, essays and recommendations they submitted.
Forty of the 300 scholars from the Regeneron Science Talent Search will be announced as finalists on January 24th. These finalists will then have the opportunity to compete for over $1.8 million in awards during a 7-day competition held in Washington D.C. from March 9th to 15th.
For more than 80 years, the Science Talent Search has recognized and rewarded high school seniors who have put in countless hours of work on original research projects and presented their findings in detailed reports that resemble graduate school theses. Many STS alumni have gone on to win millions of dollars in scholarships and receive prestigious awards such as the Nobel Prize, Fields Medal, MacArthur Fellowship, and many others.
