Come on out for a Mardi Gras celebration Saturday, March 23rd, at Memphis Catholic High School on 61 N McLean. The event is kicked off at 11 a.m. with the “Education That Works” 5K and lasts until 5 p.m. Pre-registration for the race opens up at 10:00 a.m. ETW is a program that provides students with corporate internship experience in high school so that they can pursue certain career paths in college and return to Memphis as a valuable part of the work force. Director of the event, Angela Fox, gives the simple equation of Students + Sponsors = Success.
After the race, join the festivities! Make sure to bring blankets and chairs so you can enjoy the live music. Kids can get their faces painted, bounce around in the bouncy castles, or play corn hole. This is all included with admission, which is $5 and free for children 5 & under. There is also a crew registration available for $150 that includes a 10x15 spot, 10 event entries, 10 crawfish boxes, and a gumbo entry. Bring a tent for your crew! March Madness will be playing on the big screen in the VIP tent.
Crawfish are available for $10 a box. Fox says that 700 lbs. of crawfish are coming up from New Orleans, and that Crawfish Master Shannon Runnels, a New Orleans native, will be the cook. He adds onions, potatoes, garlic, sausage, green beans, pineapples, and his own blend of spices to the boil. If you crave to get in on the action, you can join the gumbo cook-off for free!
Fox states, “Although the festival is a fundraiser with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the schools, it has turned into a real community event that people from all over Memphis attend and enjoy.” This is the Jubilee School’s final community event, so make sure you don’t miss it!
