The National Civil Rights Museum has extended the deadline for the Keeper of the Dream Award to September 29, 2023.
The Keeper of the Dream Award celebrates and recognizes the heroism and unwavering commitment of young people in championing equal rights and opportunities. Honoring outstanding 5th-12th graders within the Greater Memphis Area who have demonstrated acts of compassion, leadership, commitment, and service, this prestigious award welcomes self-nominations or submissions from educators and community leaders. Recipients will be presented the Keeper of the Dream Award at the Freedom Award Student Forum on October 19, 2023.
In its 21st year, the Keeper of the Dream Award stands in tandem with the esteemed National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award, which lauds the extraordinary efforts of individuals devoted to civil and human rights. These remarkable individuals are forging paths toward expanding opportunities for their peers and underserved communities alike.
The Keeper of the Dream award is a beacon that illuminates the extraordinary potential of our youth,” says Dr. Russ Wigginton, president of National Civil Rights Museum. “Their commitment to enact change within their community is contagious and serves as a reminder that age is no barrier to making a significant impact."
The distinguished recipients will each be awarded a $500 grant, a Keeper of the Dream signature trophy, and an annual museum family membership. Relatives of National Civil Rights Museum employees are ineligible to participate.
The Student Forum serves as the opening event for the much-anticipated National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award celebration where global figures are honored for their remarkable contributions to civil and human rights. The Forum provides students and educators with an invaluable opportunity to engage with the pioneering honorees who have ardently fought for equal rights. Through their personal stories, these leaders illustrate how commitment to justice, equality, and freedom has the potential to effect monumental change.
