Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris has announced the fourth annual Mayor’s Summer Experience Program for young adults. This year’s program theme is “Championing Challenges,” and the participants will be selected by random lottery to work within the Shelby County Government.
Mayor Harris has authorized a pay of $15 per hour for this year’s program. In addition, participants can earn a $100 bonus for perfect attendance.
“Participating in the Mayor’s Summer Work Experience is about more than coming to work, collecting your pay, and going home,” said Dr. Cedric Gary, Shelby County Director of Education, in a press release. “Our young people learn how to show up and perform their jobs with excellence. In our program, they sharpen current skills while developing a new awareness of how what they do impacts the greater community.”
The program aims to help participants improve their organizational, communication, and customer service skills. The program also includes a weekly paid professional development course.
“We’re excited to provide opportunities for young people who have an interest in working in government,” Mayor Lee Harris said in a press release. “It is my hope that they will learn professional skills that will stay with them throughout their lives. Some of our past participants have even gone on to become full-time Shelby County Government employees. Our young people will be future leaders both inside and outside of government. Our job is to help set them on that path.”
The program is open to young adults from Shelby County aged 18-24 and will run for eight weeks — Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. from June 6th through July 29th. Participants are also required to attend in-person professional development sessions on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until noon. The deadline to apply is April 8th.
