2018 PRIZM Music Camp and International Chamber Music Festival
‘Tis the season for merriment and music-making. And PRIZM Ensemble brings in good tidings by providing a couple of ways for kids to play to their heart’s content this season and for years to come.
Classical Soul Winter Camp
PRIZM Ensemble has collaborated with Perfecting Gifts to bring instrumentalists and vocalists together for its second annual Classical Soul Winter Camp. This immersive three-day camp, taking place December 20-22 at Hutchison School, teaches children aged 12-18 to play a fun twist of Memphis soul and classical pieces through private coaching sessions and collaborative music-making with classmates.
This winter camp will wrap up with a finale concert, where students will showcase what they’ve learned, on December 22nd at 4 p.m. This concert will be open to the public with a suggested donation of a toy for children in underrepresented communities throughout Memphis.
Registration ($150) is open until Saturday, December 15th. Click here for more information and to register.
PRIZM College Audition Preparation Workshop
Applying for college can be daunting for any high school student, especially when auditions for music programs are thrown into the mix. To alleviate the process, PRIZM hosts its first college audition workshop, where music professors from local colleges (University of Memphis, Rhodes College, University of Mississippi, and LeMoyne Owen College) will teach high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors the ins and outs of preparing for music program auditions, such as how to select repertoire or enhance performance and interview skills. Additionally, children will learn about the application process, scholarships, and more, to ensure preparedness.
The workshop in Hassell Hall at Rhodes college takes place Saturday, January 5th, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration, open until December 22nd, is free.
PRIZM Ensemble is a non-profit organization dedicated to incorporating quality music programming in schools and communities across Memphis through programs like these. Sabrina Hu, director of operations and educational programming for PRIZM, says, “In Memphis, where the child poverty rate is 47 percent, PRIZM's work aims to reverse this statistic and impact underserved communities by expanding access and inclusion to music education.” She adds, "Music education benefits students in numerous ways beyond learning to play an instrument. Results have shown that students with a music background obtain stronger language and reasoning skills, work better in teams, and gain discipline and self-confidence.”
