Do you have a child who stutters? Camp SAY Across the USA is here to offer a free two-day intensive program at the Orpheum Theatre’s Halloran Centre for Performing Arts and Education, November 17th & 18th. It is geared for youngsters ages 8-18. Registration for this weekend day camp opens Monday, July 23.
Memphis is one of four cities to bring this pilot program to its community. Camp SAY Across the USA: Memphis is an extension of the NYC-based organization SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young.
“I am honored to bring SAY to the Mid-South,” notes Orpheum’s vice president of education, Jennifer McGrath, who has been actively involved in the SAY organization for 15 years. SAY’s unique programming not only provides a safe place for young people who are often bullied or isolated, but also encourages them to embrace their stutter and not let it hold them back from following their biggest dreams.
The program focus is on team & confidence-building exercises and improving communication skills. It offers a wide variety of games and activities ranging from improvisation to arts & crafts.
Camp SAY leadership team partners with the Orpheum’s teaching staff to guide the campers in forming small groups and creating an original work of art such as play, poem, song, dance, or visual art. The program culminates into a performance showcasing their creativity in front of a supportive audience. Each child has an option whether or not to participate in this final presentation.
The camp is offered free of charge. It includes breakfast and lunch, plus a free camp T-shirt.
Registration opens Monday, July 23rd. Go to orpheum-memphis.com/campsay for completing enrollment form. Advance registration is required by November 1. Also subscribe to the Camp SAY email newsletter for updates on the program.
