The People: Local artist Kristi Bauer's newest masterpiece is Pinot's Palette, an upscale BYOB painting studio in East Memphis that opened in June and blends fine art, friends, and fun in a casual setting. Let Pinot's Palette's talented art instructors help you tap the artist within.

The Buzz: Kristi Bauer (right) has always loved art, but could never afford the kind of work she admired in galleries. Instead, the resourceful advertising/marketing professional took up oil painting as a hobby and soon began selling her work at local festivals. When her husband was downsized from his job last year, the couple began looking for a business opportunity they could launch in Memphis. Using her passion for art as a springboard, Kristi soon discovered Pinot's Palette.
The Houston-based franchise "appealed to my business as well as artistic side," she says. "I enjoy entertaining and this business is all about entertainment. I feel like I'm hosting a party when we have classes. I greet people and help them set up, and I may make sangria for a large class or party."
Walking into Pinot's is like stepping into a rainbow. Sunlight streams through the glass storefront, bringing to life bright canvases that line the walls within. Some are Kristi's originals; others are replicas of famous paintings which clients can reproduce in their own style. There are painting tables with stools and easels, and cocktail tables for socializing. The painting tables are even finished in chalkboard paint, inviting patrons to doodle to their heart's content.
A key part of Kristi's business is hosting private parties. Her space is perfect for corporate events and family gatherings, birthdays, bridal showers, or a mom's night out. Kristi and staff will help clients plan an event, including creating a custom painting, if desired. You bring the beverages (beer, wine, cocktails) and snacks, and Pinot's Palette provides the rest — from glassware and cork screws to canvas and paint. Once settled, an art instructor will guide you step-by-step, through the process of painting a picture. Says Kristi, "It's very rewarding helping people tap into their creative side."
