Science fiction and fantasy are some of the best genres to bridge the gap between children's and adult literature. With themes that lean into the imaginary and feature wondrous and expansive worlds, science fiction and fantasy can draw in even the most stubborn reader. Here, we've put together a shortlist of titles that we think are great choices for curious science fiction and fantasy readers.
The Last Kids on Earth by Max Brallier
This is an interesting take on a traditional fantasy story set in a town that is besieged by zombies and otherworldly horrors. Jack Sullivan must overcome his struggles to see the power within. The book, which is a hybrid graphic novel and chapter book, is a great pick-up for kids who may not be the most excited about reading. The author’s message is clear as day, and the art and story are immaculate.

A classic novel, Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time is a wonderful sci-fi story that is perfect for middle school-aged kids. The novel, which is a part of a fantastic series, has an extraordinary cast of characters and a great story that will leave time travel lovers burning through the pages. Following a girl searching for her missing scientist of a father, L’Engle is able to masterfully implement complex social issues and topics while presenting them in a kid-friendly form.
Vermillion by Molly Tanzer

Vermillion is a special gem. A fantasy western set during the California Gold Rush that follows the story of Elouise "Lou" Merriweather — a psychopomp, or ghost hunter. In her work, Tanzer presents a strong Chinese-American female protagonist on a quest across the country. The world is filled with historical references that tie wonderfully into the fantasy elements throughout the story. Recommended for middle school- to high school-aged kids, the story will fulfill your child’s dream of being a wild west cowboy ghostbuster.
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

The first time I read Ender’s Game, I was blown away. The pure scale that the story takes place on is unrivaled, and as a huge space nerd when I was little, it was the first book I read that scratched my sci-fi itch. The book's massive space battles and well-thought-out and deep characters gave me a love for sci-fi that I still carry to this day. Though complex at points, Orson Scott Card’s novel is a great introduction into the overarching sci-fi genre and a great way to transition young adults into adult fiction.
