A two-night, interactive event sponsored by the Orpheum Theater will bring original stories from Memphis high school students to a broad audience.
StoryFest 2020 was planned for a live event back in March. It was postponed, of course, after the pandemic arrived. But Orpheum leaders have reimagined the in-person event into a two-night event on YouTube.
“As a storyteller, I believe there is great power for healing and transformation when people have the opportunity to share their perspectives and listen deeply to the stories of others,” said Jenita Nakamura, the Orpheum’s manager of education engagement. “Deep listening is what this program is all about, so I'm glad that we are still able to make StoryFest happen, even in a virtual setting.”
Night one features a filmed storytelling performance from Overton High School students that “explores stories of being lost and found.” “From Where I Stand: Lost and Found” explores what it means to get lost in ourselves, relationships, ideas and finding your passion, your friends, and your sense of identity.
Night two features a digital storytelling documentary from seven students with The Live Seed at Douglass High School. Stories in “Listen Up!: Legacy” explore the student’s ideas as they “define and shape their individual legacies.”
“With the lingering effects of COVID-19, people are afraid,” said Crystal L. Johnson-Evans, Live Seed, Inc. executive director. “It is platforms such as these that give us the time we need to learn about others. This new way of connecting may give us new eyes in a world that always makes young people invisible.”
