Malco's Summer Drive-in reopened this past weekend. I can’t remember the last time I visited a drive-in theater. I know for a fact I have not been to one since I have been old enough to drive, sadly. Malco opened the weekend with a double-feature for family viewing of Trolls: World Tour and Dolittle.
Upon pulling into the theater off Summer Avenue, Malco attendants were wearing masks and asked that you leave 6 feet between your car and the next when parking in your destined screen area and to wear a mask when you go to the restroom and the concession stand. The price tag is $20 per vehicle and you can currently only purchase online at malco.com in advance of the showing. There were no hidden fees, which was a nice surprise.
The picture quality was great and we had a blast “camping out” in the back of our vehicle, socially distanced from the families near us. The movie started about 15 minutes after showtime, which was 8:15 p.m., and then the second movie started 10 or so minutes after the first movie finished. A lot of cars pulled off after the first movie, but we stuck around for a little bit of the second movie until we — okay mostly me, the mom — were just exhausted and ready to trek home. The weather was a breezy 75 degrees, and it was just perfect. No bugs bothered us, but we did pack the bug spray just in case. We brought snacks to chomp on while we were there, but the hot dogs and popcorn from the concession stand that passed us looked pretty tasty.
We can’t wait to go back, as soon as the movies rotate! When's the last time you ventured to the drive-in? Comment below!
A few things to know before you go, as we learned:
- Know how to turn off your daytime running lights if your car has them. We were in a Honda Odyssey and the task was not simple, it took some Googling, but we finally figured out you have to put the ER brake on and then turn the car on.
- Bring chairs to sit outside your car if you wish. We did not think to bring our folding chairs, and our bums were not happy.
- Totally up to you, but we backed into our parking spot so we could open the rear of the car to lay out the kiddos.
- There were a few kids around that looked to be ready for bedtime. Next time we go I am putting my kids in pajamas so my youngest doesn't end up sleeping in his clothes again.
