On May 11th, enjoy WKNO's free Ready to Learn – Family Day event. Felicia Peat, project coordinator of WNKO PBS KIDS 24/7 Channel, says, “We strategically go into many of the neighborhoods in the city to meet the people where they are.”
There will be rock climbing, food, entertainment, vendors, meet and greet with Teacher, Teacher, and free rides for the children. Rockin’ Robin DJ will provide the music. Peter Pan and Junie B. Jones will be there, as well as a Moonhouse, balloon animals, and arts & crafts. There will be free blood pressure testing, which is provided by medical students from the University of Tennessee. Everything, even the food and entertainment, is free and all-inclusive family fun! Peat assures, “It doesn’t matter if you are under 1 or over 90, there is something for you to enjoy.”
Peat says the aim of the event is “to highlight the importance of reading literacy to children and their families.” Though the event is designed to encourage reading and literacy, this is no boring event. It's organized "with family fun and engagement in mind,” says Peat. “From the Chicken Dance on stage down to the wonderful hugs from our very own ‘Teacher Teacher,’ the fun and learning never stops.”
The vendors also look forward to the event, as WNKO makes sure everyone is engaged right to the very last minute. Peat adds, “All we’re doing is literally coming out of the box, the television box that is, and into the places where [families] live each day... This is what we do each day, and the Ready to Learn events allow us to put a more personal touch to it.”
Peat emphasizes, “This event is about community… period.” So get out and enjoy the community with your friends and family!
