Did you follow Alex Eilers, the science educator from the Pink Palace as she ventured to Antarctica this winter? She traveled there as a member of PolarTREC, a research expedition funded by the National Science Foundation. They’ve been gathering data on Weddell seals to learn more about the diet and health of these large sea mammals, and to gain insight into the health of the ocean.
On Thursday, May 10th, she and scientist Jennifer Burns, a biology professor at the University of Alaska, will discuss the PolarTREC project and their findings. The reception starts at 6 p.m., followed by a presentation at 6:30 p.m. Details at: memphismuseums.org/mu-event program-14469/
“I felt privileged to be a part of this amazing adventure,” says Eilers, who journaled extensively about her work while at McMurdo Station, answering 30 questions or more a day to people who posted on her site.
More than 100 schools also participated in the PolarConnect live feed from Antarctica and the museum mailed out more than 2,400 postcards with the continent’s postmark. To read more about her experience, go to our blog, Living in the Moment, at memphisparent.com.
