Memphis University School (MUS), a college-preparatory, independent, day school for boys, has announced its plans to expand to a sixth-grade class, joining its current student body of grades 7-12.
The MUS mission is dedicated to academic excellence, cultivation of service and leadership, and the development of well-rounded young men of strong moral character, and that commitment is now being extended even earlier.
While our 130-year legacy is rooted in tradition, our institution is ever-evolving,” says Pete Sanders, MUS headmaster. “Part of that evolution includes the introduction of a sixth grade next fall.”

A Sixth Grade Task Force and the MUS Board of Trustees concluded a years-long process that proved a tremendous opportunity for an earlier introduction to MUS that will accommodate boys graduating from K-5 schools.
To appropriately scale curriculum and extracurricular programs, MUS will accept an introductory sixth-grade class of approximately 24 boys with plans for future growth. In addition to general education and curriculum — math, science, language arts, reading, history, arts, technology, and PE — sixth graders will also focus on executive functioning, study skills, and character-building. As a sixth-grade class, students will have special events and clubs where they will participate as a group, but also as an integral part of the Lower School. Students will also be able to take advantage of seasonal sports offerings, for both league and recreational teams.
Our unparalleled academic experience, faculty commitment, and 94-acre wooded campus offer students an opportunity to grow intellectually, morally, artistically, physically, and socially, becoming leaders well-equipped to turn ideas into action,” says Sanders. “We are thrilled to introduce this opportunity to rising sixth-grade families as well.”
Applications for all grades are now open. “We are very excited for what this expansion means for our school and our city,” says Sanders.
