The Children’s Museum of Memphis (CMOM) will host a new pop-up exhibit, DIY Adventure, set to open to the public for one day of exploration on January 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This hands-on pop-up lays the foundation for and serves as an introduction to the museum's next traveling exhibit — How People Make Things, inspired by Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood television series. How People Make Things describes how every object in our world has a story of how it is made through linking familiar childhood objects to a manufacturing process that combines people, ideas, and technology. How People Make Things opens January 20, at CMOM, and will offer hands-on activities using real factory tools and machines to create objects with four manufacturing processes – molding, cutting, deforming, and assembly.
If you grew up watching Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, you know that local craftspeople served as educators and experts in their field, demonstrating to viewers how their profession operates and enhances the community,” says Dr. Stewart Burgess, CEO, Children’s Museum of Memphis. “DIY Adventure brings that same spirit to CMOM.”
This one-day event is packed with hands-on activities led by local artisans and is included with museum admission.
Through this hands-on exhibit, children can:
- Learn pewter casting and work on mini anvils with metalsmiths from the Metal Museum of Memphis.
- Finish toy tops with The MidSouth Woodturners.
- Interact with textiles through knitting and fabric doodling and sensory exploration with yarn and knot tying with Arrow Creative and Adina Day.
- Make soap with Oh Sweetz!
- Craft and decorate their own birdhouse.
Children of all ages will have opportunities to explore tactile activities and walk away with items they created alongside Mid-South professionals,” says Burgess. “It’s a stellar entree into How People Make Things and is a great wintertime activity for children of all ages.”
Families and children are invited to explore this fun, DIY workshop to experience a little piece of what will come with the next exhibit.
The Children’s Museum of Memphis is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission of inspiring children to explore, imagine, and create, growing their minds and filling them with endless possibilities.
