High school theatre troupes around the Mid-South are likely whooping it up this week. The Orpheum Theatre released the nominees for the popular High School Musical Theatre Awards, coming up in May.
Modeled after the Tony® Awards, the High School Musical Theatre Awards recognize achievements in all areas of high school musical theatre. This year, awards will be given in 29 different categories, for acting, set design, lighting, and more. The awards show, which features snippets of song and dance numbers from many of this year’s strongest contenders, is always a winner.
The 2015 awards show host is Broadway and TV star Kyle Dean Massey.
Massey, a native of Jonesboro, Arkansas, grew up attending shows at the Orpheum. He’s gained recognition for his strong performances in the Broadway hits Wicked, Pippin, and Next to Normal. Check out this cool behind-the-scenes footage he shot about preparing for Pippin on Broadway.com. (You won’t actually see him doing any of the show, just preparation, but it's interesting…) He’s also on the hit TV series Nashville, where he portrays songwriter Kevin Bicks. His resume also includes roles on The Good Wife, and Inside Amy Schumer.
The High School Musical Awards show takes place Monday, May 11, at 7 p.m. at The Orpheum Theatre. Tickets are $15-$35.
