If you like to shop for handmade goods, head to the Independent Style Market in Overton Square, where you’ll find a great assortment of one-of-a-kind items from 25 area artists.
You might have discovered the pop-up store they hosted last December in the square, “which was a tremendous success,” says Mary O’Kelley, who started the business together with hat maker, Tonya Tate.
O’Kelley shows me her funky line of wearable art, necklaces, and bracelets, which she creates using materials like these cool watch gears. She’s also part of Etsy Memphis. This is Mary's work here. Her style? Steam punk industrial.
Here you’ll find several styles of jewelry, along with hats, art for your home, clothing, and several organic beauty product lines.
Here are a few things I liked:
Colorful handbags, perfect for fall.
Warm knitted caps for kids.
Organic beauty and body products by Garden Therapy. • Mom & beauty product maker Kristen Miller comes up with her own recipes using essential oils, shea and cocoa butter, coconut oil, and botanicals. Though she wasn't fond of chemistry, she likes her home business.
“It’s a lot like cooking,” she says, “a pinch of this and a dash of that.”
Trendy hats & hair accessories by Ruby Naturals.
If you're an artist with a product to sell, go online to Indy's website and learn how you can be part of the their network.
