Grab your kid, a fishing rod, and have fun this Saturday! Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park is hosting its Annual Kid’s Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, June 8, from 8 until 11 a.m. This free fishing day will be held at Poplar Tree Lake. Fishing is allowed from the bank only, and boats may only be used to cross the lake. Limited help from parents is encouraged and live or artificial bait may be used.
Trophies will be awarded for the largest fish, the smallest fish, and the most fish for kids ages 0 to 7, 8 to 12, and 13 to 16. Lots of door prizes will also be awarded, as well as a drawing for the grand prize, a new bicycle.
Registration starts at 7 a.m. at the park's Nature Center. Donations are appreciated and will go directly to support park services and events. Go here to learn about other summer activities at Meeman-Shelby Forest.
Several state parks will be hosting rodeos on Saturday. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has designated June 8th as a Free Fishing Day across Tennessee, allowing the public to fish without a license. For other special kid events across the state, visit TWRA's website.
