On Saturday, April 27th, the Maria Montessori School will host the 16th Annual Maria Montessori Regatta and Duck Race at the school’s campus at 740 Harbor Bend Road, Harbor Town. In a press release, Maria Schuermann-Cole, headmistress of the school, said “For the 16th year, we are excited to invite families from all over the Mid-South to participate in a celebration of our school and community at the annual Regatta.”
The event starts in the morning at 9:30 with the Kids Fun Run. At 10 begin the children’s games, make-and-take art, grilled food, kayak rides in the pond, and boat rides in the harbor. The Wacky Boat Contest, the event that most people are excited for, starts in the afternoon at 1. Teams have one hour to make a boat out of the provided cardboard and duct tape. After the hour to build is over, the teams choose a member to climb the boat and race across the pond at 2 p.m.
The press release describes the Duck Race as “a luck-of-the-draw game where individuals ‘sponsor’ a numbered rubber duck.” It is $5 for each duck. Once the sponsorship period ends, the ducks are released into a pond and one duck is drawn. Whoever sponsored that duck wins a $100 prize. The event closes out with live music by local musicians Accidental Field Trip from 3:15-5 p.m.
In a press release, Krissi Williams, the event organizer for the Regatta, states, “The Regatta is a springtime tradition for many families, and we feel it adds something special to our Harbor Town Community. It’s open to all families, not just those connected with MMS, who enjoy getting out and enjoying springtime on the river in Memphis.”
Admission to the event is free and open to the public, but some events require an additional fee. Visit their website for more information: mariamontessorischool.org/regatta.
