Trying to save money for a vacation when you’re a single parent can be tough. Marceia Miller, mom of seven, would love to reward her children’s good grades and behavior with a family trip, but due to her finances, she says, “That’s just a dream.”
Earning money for extras means working longer hours, which takes her away from family time. (Pictured, Marceia Miller with her children.)
Successful Single Moms Memphis, Inc. understands the challenges single moms face. That’s why the organization has created STAYcation…Be A Tourist In Your Own Town, a weeklong summer program that gives moms a chance to enjoy some of Memphis’s most popular attractions for free or at a discount. Enrollment is limited to the first 30 participants.
STAYcation runs Sunday, June 1st, to Sunday, June 8th, and is designed to encourage families to live, eat, and play in Memphis. “Our goal is to have a host of destinations at affordable prices for single parents and their children,” says Executive Director Nicole Gates. “It’s our hope that this collaboration will boost the number of visitors to area attractions while providing an outlet for single parents to explore our city.” Organizers also hope it will give moms and their children a sense of pride in the city's history and what Memphis has to offer.
Among the attractions participating are the Memphis Redbirds, Backbeat Tours, Golf and Games Family Park, Stax Museum, the Pink Palace, the Brooks Museum, Dixon Gallery and Gardens, the Memphis Zoo, and more. • Interested? Visit successfulsinglemoms.org and click on Calendar.
