
Got a Potterhead in the family? Then here’s your chance to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the literary phenomenon that rocks the world of children’s fantasy. Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine, a traveling exhibit created by the National Library of Medicine makes a stop on its national tour at the Collierville Burch Library from July 3 through August 12.
This one-of-a-kind exhibit explores the link between the Harry Potter series and the history of science. It showcases collections from the History of Medicine Division at the National Library of Medicine.
“The panel display set up by the Magazine Room in the library focuses on six different themes,” notes Amber Halter, adult services librarian at the Collierville Burch Library. “It touches on the topics of potions, monsters, herbology, magical creatures, fantastic beasts, and immortality.”
In conjunction with this ongoing exhibit, the library is hosting Harry Potter’s World Family Day on Tuesday, July 11, from 2-4 p.m. Families are invited to come join in this library-wide celebration checking out the traveling exhibit and taking part in activity stations relating to the theme panels.
“Animal Architects, a special presentation of live animals is going to be the big draw for Family Day,” mentions Halter. The program takes place at the Storytelling Room from 2-3 p.m. Among other creatures, you will see a Honduran milk snake, a Lanner falcon, and a timber wolf.
In addition to this, there will be hands-on activities set up all around the library. Build a LEGO monster in the children’s area, make your own wand and try your hand in a Harry Potter Trivia Contest in the young adult section. Work on a Sorcerer’s Stone in the study room, and put together a mask in the DVD area of the library. On the way out in the Halle Room, pick up your herb seeds to plant at home.
