Bike Safety Checks • Make sure tires are properly inflated. Look for tears, cuts, or punctures. • Test hand or foot brakes. • Spin wheels to check alignment. • Check bike chain. Apply oil if needed.Child Safety Check • Make sure your child fits his or her bike properly. He should be able to comfortably stand with both feet on the ground and the bike beneath him. • Buy a helmet that fits properly. It should sit squarely on the head and not tip back. • Wear bright, retro-reflective materials so drivers will see you. • Ride during daylight hours only. • If riding on busy streets, leave iPods and ear buds at home. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. • Follow the rules of the road: Ride on the right side of the street, stop at all stop signs and signals, use hand signals to let motorists know you’re turning, and look both ways before crossing an intersection.
