First place winner, by Emily Persons
Student artwork and essays on display at the Memphis Jewish Community Center (MJCC) this month shines a light on the Holocaust.
Drawings and paintings submitted by middle and high school students from across Memphis came in response to the Memphis Jewish Federation Holocaust Art and Essay Contest. The competition encouraged students to examine the work of Holocaust survivor Samuel Bak and consider the function of art in the lives of survivors. Cash prizes were awarded by the Tennessee Holocaust Commissioners from Memphis. First place in art went to Emily Persons, an eighth grader at St. Agnes Academy. The essay winner was Zahava Gersten, a senior at Goldie Margolin School for Girls.
Also featured this month is Holocaust survivor/artist Nelly Toll, who shares her story for Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, on Sunday, April 7th, at 4 p.m. at MJCC.
