Where does the water we drink come from, and how does it benefit us? A visit to the Lichterman Nature Center will teach all about water as the center unveils its newest addition, the Buckman Science Trail at Mertie’s Lake. The trail dedication takes place Saturday, June 4th, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The park is free to visitors that day, so bring a picnic lunch and explore the trails. Special activities will include a live animal show by Larry Pickens at 11:30 a.m. and live music by the Delta Nomads.
New signs around the lake describe how water benefits our environment, our health, the city, and world. Education programs will also be developed for schoolchildren. The program, which has been a year in the making, is the result of a partnership between the nature center and the University of Memphis’ Groundwater Institute. The institute’s associate director, Brian Waldron, will be the guest speaker during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The trail honors philanthropist Mertie Buckman, who was an environmental steward.
